# GB3OA Southport > 145.6125MHz(RV49) / CTCSS 82.5Hz / C4FM ## Posts - [SWLANCS cross link bridge down…](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2025/10/02/swlancs-cross-link-bridge-down/): UPDATE 2nd October 2025 – The new PC has been configured and installed. The YSF <> Wires-X RF bridge is now functional again. UPDATE 26th September 2025 – It looks like (finally) the PC has died, as a result, he cross link between the Wires-X room and the YSF Reflector is down again. Configuration of the replacement will start as soon as possible. Both the Wires-X room and YSF Reflector are functional, they’re just not bridged. UPDATE 13th March 2024 – It appears the PC we thought had died has an intermittent fault. For now at least, it appears to […] - [A Wires-X Update from GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2025/06/23/a-wires-x-update-from-gb3oa/): Not quite sure where to begin with this — it’s been a challenging few days! As many of you will know, the PC running Wires-X at the repeater site gave up the ghost a few weeks ago. When sourcing its replacement, we opted to take a slightly different approach and invest in a better-spec refurbished machine. We settled on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M910q Mini PC (i3-6100T, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) running Windows 11. Since it only needs to run Wires-X, this should more than meet the requirements. A quick note on background: even before this recent failure, we’d been dealing […] - [Wires-X Linking Restored](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2025/06/20/wires-x-linking-restored/): A new PC running Yaesu Wires-X has now been installed on site. We’ll see how this works over the coming days. The GB3OA Team. - [GB3OA - Partial restoration](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2025/06/06/gb3oa-partial-restoration/): It appears the Wires-X PC had withdrawn service. When an HRI-200 is physically connected to the repeater, the repeater has to be switched into a different mode. What had happened was the PC was not booting, this prevented the repeater from working. This only happens when the repeater is booted from cold, but unfortunately a power cycle on site caused the whole set up to hang. We’ve put the repeater back into basic mode with the result that it’s now fine but obviously it’s working without any linking. A new PC will be sourced in due course. The GB3OA Team. - [GB3OA down](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2025/05/31/gb3oa-down/): There appears to be an issue with the hardware on site. Until such time as we get site access, the repeater has been turned off. We hope to have this resolved quickly. The GB3OA team. - [Scheduled Connections - Update](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2024/11/24/scheduled-connections-update/): Thanks all for your patience! We’re pleased to report some progress on the previously reported issue on scheduled connections. Some changes have been made, not sure which one did the trick, or maybe it’s a combination, but scheduled connections are now available again. An updated version of the software became available so that’s been installed, plus we’ve switched VPN providers and also implemented a VLAN at the site of the repeater. In addition, we’ve resurrected the GB3OA room and bridged it to the YSF reflector 11704 (GB-SW-LANCS) So, here’s the current connections schedule: Please note – The repeater can be […] - [Some technical issues - Removal of scheduled connections.](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2024/11/03/some-technical-issues-removal-of-scheduled-connections/): For the latest update on this issue, click here. Maybe it’s the PC we run Wires-X on, maybe it’s Wires-X itself. Possibly it’s the auto-connect scheduler that runs in the background. Either way, over recent weeks we’ve seen multiple hiccups in the way Wires-X performs (or rather doesn’t), specifically that it keeps crashing taking the PC with it. The scheduler is only installed to facilitate the connection to NWFG a couple of times a day. The logs also show, that while the repeater is connected to NWFG, there is little to no local activity on GB3OA As a result, and […] - [Back to basics.....](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2024/04/29/back-to-basics/): After several months of operation, looking at the logs it’s clear to see the repeater is getting very little use. Maybe with all the additional ways of linking that were provided, it’s all got a little too complicated. So…. Changes have been made with the result that GB3OA is now a simple FM / C4FM repeater with no additional ways of linking (Wires-X of course still exists). It’s not normally connected anywhere, but does have its own room (Southport-UK). So, feel free to use it to suit your own needs. Hopefully this way we may get a little more activity! […] - [Linking](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2023/08/11/linking/): Everything is to some extent, still being developed. But we thought it may help to give an overview of what linking is available, both in terms of using the repeater and seeing what you can link too, plus how to connect to the repeater if you’re outside of its coverage area. As a ‘starter for ten’ a new page has been added to the website to give an overview. Please see the link below. Linking from / to GB3OA We hope it helps! - [Yaesu DR-2XE now on air.](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2023/07/26/yaesu-dr-2xe-now-on-air/): Out with the old….. And in with the new…. We’re pleased to report that as planned, a Yaesu DR-2XE has now replaced the old Tait hardware at GB3OA. As previously mentioned, the Yaesu DR-2XE offers both standard analogue FM and C4FM. Whatever the receiver hears will be the mode that’s used. Analogue in, analogue out. C4FM in, C4FM out. It’s one or the other, but not both together. Please note the that the standard logic of the repeater will no longer give a K (when using analogue), there is however a squelch tail of 2.5 seconds so you know whether […] - [Update - April 2023](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2023/04/16/update-april-2023/): Post updated 28th April 2023 to correct previous VW/DN comments (in italics) Just a short note to let everyone know of the latest developments. We’re confident that the new hardware appears to work just fine, at least on the bench. The team are now waiting for a suitable opportunity to get the new repeater installed on site. We may have to wait another month or two for this, but we’ll keep you posted once we have a target date. In the meantime, the existing hardware continues to function. It may be a good time to introduce everyone to the intended […] - [NOV renewed](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2023/02/26/nov-renewed/): The Notice of Variation has now been renewed which allows GB3OA to operate for another three years. As soon as we have some news as to when we plan to swap out the hardware to the new Yaesu DR-2XE we’ll post it here first. Several ducks need to be in row to achieve this, but once it’s complete we’re hoping the performance will be at least as good as, but hopefully better. The spec of the new hardware says it should be, but time will tell! In the meantime, why not encourage other amateurs to get on and use the […] - [GB3OA update - February 2023](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2023/02/04/gb3oa-update-february-2023/): Just to keep everyone up to date on the latest status on the upgrade to the GB3OA repeater. The new repeater hardware has arrived (Yeasu DR-2XE) and has been set up on the bench. It has a pair of dummy loads on the TX & RX sockets and in addition is now connected to an HRI-200 for WiresX operation. In terms of the native hardware, other than our usual concerns over having a remote Windows PC (we just know at some point that’s going to be a problem despite all the protection and options for remote access / restart), at […] - [GB3OA Repeater - a roadmap](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2023/01/07/gb3oa-roadmap/): A short update on some of the ideas the team are playing around with at the moment. This doesn’t necessarily constitute a commitment, rather a statement of intent, a roadmap if you like. The following steps represent the logical order we plan to progress, that said, it’s quite possible some of the later phases may take place sooner. Our ultimate aim is to have an analog / C4FM based repeater with its own Wires-X room that’s also capable of being accessed (over the internet) via other modes. In other words, the only RF input GB3OA will support directly will either […] - [Status update sent to UKREPEATER.](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2022/10/29/status-update-sent-to-ukrepeater/): The following update was sent to the ukrepeater site: GB3OA LINKING UPDATE: IRLP and Echolink are no longer available. While the repeater is licensed for most digital modes, none are currently provided. Plans underway for a move to Analogue / C4FM repeater at some point in the future. - [A long overdue update](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2022/10/25/a-long-overdue-update/): For those that have been following these pages, you’ve almost certainly noticed that it’s not been updated for quite some time now. We apologise for that since quite a lot has changed. Our good friend G4TUP became SK back in July 2019, David was largely responsible for keeping the web site up to date and since then everything has been rather low key due to COVID and other priorities. For this update we’ll concentrate on what’s changed, a future missive will address what ideas we’re having for the future. As far as the (RF) hardware, location, aerial etc, nothing has […] - [GB3OA - Back on air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2020/01/12/gb3oa-back-on-air-2/): On Saturday evening (11th January 2020) the repeater’s power supply was swapped out. For now, everything seems ok, but we’ll obviously keep an eye on things over the next few days. 73, G4EID & G8XVV - [GB3OA - Status 'Off Air'](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2020/01/10/gb3oa-status-off-air/): Just a short update, the repeater appears to have suffered a power supply failure. Further investigation will be undertaken this weekend. A working spare (power supply module) is available so assuming we can establish that is the only fault, it’s likely we can have it back on before Monday. Any further updates will be posted here. - [Internet Linking back online](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2019/08/07/internet-linking-back-online/): Further to the last news item, we’re pleased to report that the internet connection issues have been resolved and as a result, IRLP and EchoLink are now back in service on GB3OA. - [Internet Linking currently down....](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2019/07/26/internet-linking-currently-down/): We have run into an issue with the internet connection, so for the time being, IRLP and Echolink are currently unavailable on GB3OA. We hope to be back online as soon as possible. - [Nodes now at 100%](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/10/07/nodes-now-at-100/): The final tweaking of the nodes took place successfully today and the nodes are now running at 100%, as was proved by several caliber QSOs this afternoon. Points to note: timeout is four minutes on both the IRLP and Echolink nodes – five minutes using RF-to-RF through GB3OA repeater. If you exceed the time on Echolink the link will be disconnected. - [Final tweaking of IRLP and Echolink Nodes](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/10/07/final-tweaking-of-irlp-and-echolink-nodes/): The nodes will be off-air this lunchtime for final tweaking of the equipment. You will still be able to come in to Echolink from your phone, but it won’t be going anywhere, just into a 50ohm resistor 🙂 As usual, GB3OA repeater and the Shoutcast stream are not affected. - [Nodes down for maintenance Saturday 29th](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/09/28/nodes-down-for-maintenance-saturday-29th/): As Saturday always seems to be the quitest day on GB3OA and the nodes, we’ll be taking advantage of this to replace some node equipment tomorrow, Saturday 29th September 2018. The nodes will be off-air around  lunchtime or early afternoon for what may be up to several hours i.e. until the nodes are performing again as normal. This will not affect repeater RF use nor Shoutcast streaming. - [Nodes backup](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/09/24/nodes-backup/): The IRLP and Echolink nodes were off-air today between 12.00 and 12.20 UTC for backup of the software. This is performed monthly, with three months of previous backups available should the present software become unstable. Apologies to anyone who tried to use the nodes between these times. - [IRLP and Echolink nodes now back on-air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/09/22/irlp-and-echolink-nodes-now-back-on-air-2/): After a small amount of reburbishmemnt of the mast and aerial the IRLP and Echolink nodes are again on-air. Please feel free to test them. But it can be a bit like ships passing in the night, so I suggest to those who automatically receive this GB3OA  news that they test at 10a.m., 2p.m. or 5p.m. if they wish to have a QSO. In other news: the part of Southport Pier that runs across the sea will be closed from October 1st until Christmas for refurbishment and construction of new attractions. This means that the Pier-to-Pier Challenge as detailed in […] - [Nodes update](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/09/21/nodes-update/): As mentioned in the previous news item the nodes had to be taken off-air last Wednesday, two days ago. After lowering the mast and aerial for the nodes in the gusty wind, a brief inspection revealed that they had suffered to some extent with the salt air. Some refurbishment therefore needs to take place but this needs to be done in dry conditions. The weather forecast for today (Friday) is for virtually continual rain and gusty conditions so unfortunately the refurbishment will have to be delayed until tomorrow (Saturday), when the weather is forecast to improve substantially over the weekend. […] - [IRLP and Echolink nodes off-air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/09/19/irlp-and-echolink-nodes-off-air/): Until the wind subsides the nodes at GB3OA have been taken 0ff-air. A further notice will appear when they are returned to normal operating. The repeater section of GB3OA and the Shoutcast stream feed are unaffected.   - [Latest News and Information](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2018/03/09/latest-news-and-information/): The IRLP and Echolink nodes at GB3OA were off-air from approximately 14.05 to 14.25hrs this afternnon for the nodes software to have its monthly back-up. There are around ten individual daily users of Echolink and several IRLP users that are regulars, one in Blackpool virtually daily connecting to a node in West Sweden. Popular times seem to be after breakfast, either side of lunch time, late afternoon, and from 20.00hrs into the small hours, with US stations appearing around 01.00hrs each night. Local mobiles seem to be active around 08.45 and 17.00hrs. Several times each week the IRLP node is […] - [Up to date news about the nodes at GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/12/27/up-to-date-news-about-the-nodes-at-gb3oa/): The New Years Eve welcome to 2018 will take place as usual on node 9200, the Crossroads reflector in the US where countries log in as they go through the New Year. GB3OA will be connected to this reflector when the countries who usually participate connect. These are: New Zealand – 11.00UTC Australia – 13.00UTC Malaysia – 16.00UTC South Africa – 22.00UTC UK – 00.00UTC OA will be connected at five minutes to the hour for twenty minutes. Users of GB3OA are welcome to connect OA to node 9200 at other times themselves, and especially for the US at 5, […] - [A change to the use of Echolink](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/11/28/a-change-to-the-use-of-echolink/): There’s been a small change to a custom decode Echolink script at GB3OA repeater that should help local Echolink users. The original IRLP/Echolink server required outgoing echolink request connections to be prefaced by the hash (#) symbol. With the new server software this changed to the star (*). This confused users but its change was detailed on both the GB3OA news page and the internet-linking page. Looking at the logs many outbound echolink requests are still trying to use the hash symbol before eventually finding that the star symbol works instead. So to stop this confusion an addition to the […] - [Connecting Echolink to IRLP on GB3OA not possible](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/10/30/connecting-echolink-to-irlp-on-gb3oa-not-possible/): This was not mentioned on the Internet Linking page on the GB3OA website and so one user was trying to do this. The following has now been added to the Internet Linking page…. Can I come into GB3OA using Echolink and send DTMF tones over Echolink to make GB3OA connect to an IRLP node or reflector? The full answer is No. Firstly, the nodes server filters out any DTMF tones on Echolink. Secondly it’s not possible to link Echolink to IRLP. The Echolink and IRLP bods have agreed this as the two are quite different, and it could lead to […] - [Streaming of Southport Air Show Shoutcast problem](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/09/16/streaming-of-southport-air-show-shoutcast-problem/): It seems some picking up the Air Show relay from shoutcast.com are having problems, and others not. This will be taken up with Shoutcast itself by the GB3OA Repeater Keepers. For now, try Shoutcast and if there is a problem receiving the stream go to The Stream page on the GB3OA website and enter the given IP address into VLC as instructed. - [Technical details - SAS streaming](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/09/15/technical-details-sas-streaming/): A couple of local operators have asked for technical details on relaying pilots talkback during the Southport Air Show through shoutcast.com The normal rig that receives GB3OA transmissions is a Baofeng UV-3R. Its audio output is pumped through a sound card attached to a Raspberry Pi v.2. This uses the audio level controller Alsamixer program and then DarkIce to convert the analogue audio to digital and send it to shoutcast.com. However, the UV-3R does not have AM nor airband to be able to receive the pilots transmissions. So a Kenwood TH-F7 HT will be used instead of the Baofeng. This […] - [Tweeting now online again](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/09/14/tweeting-now-online-again/): Since the change to a new nodes server at GB3OA the tweet messages of when there is a connection to the nodes has been offline. Now, through the efforts of Repeater Keeper Mark G4EID, this facility is all fully working again. The tweets can either be seen on the right hand side of any page on https://gb3oa.org.uk , or by subscribing to GB3OA on Twitter. By subscribing on Twitter you get instant notification that a user has connected to one of the nodes, the distant IRLP or Echolink node or reflector in use, and the callsign of the user. - [GB3OA and Southport Air Show details](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/09/12/gb3oa-and-southport-air-show-details/): We’ve put the following onto the Southgate ARC news website which feeds many clubs, as well as the ARRL news site: This week there will be many thousands of scanner enthusiasts descending on Southport, UK for the Southport Air Show, and no doubt many of these will be hams. 2m repeater GB3OA, located next to Southport railway station, covers the beach fully at excellent strength, and has IRLP and Echolink nodes 5302. The full details for your HT memory are 145.6125, PL tone 82.5Hz and -600kHz shift. Up to 150,000 spectators will attend over the three days of Friday 15th, […] - [GB3OA IRLP now back on-line](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/09/12/gb3oa-irlp-now-back-on-line/): Testing this morning shows that IRLP is now back on-line and working normally. It seems something must have happened over in the States due to Hurricane Irma to cause the outage. However, there is another Hurricane on its way so there may be problems again when it passes through. Also, the IRLP node status page was not updated from 10.38 UTC yesterday but is now being updated OK. http://irlp.g4eid.co.uk/status/statusnode_page.html Echolink continues to work normally. - [GB3OA IRLP and Hurricane Irma](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/09/11/gb3oa-irlp-and-hurricane-irma/): The IRLP node at GB3OA is not functioning at present owing to problems caused by Hurricane Irma. Therefore it has been disabled for the present. The Echolink node at GB3OA is for the moment functioning correctly, although, of course, this could well alter. Any changes to the above will be posted. RF to RF QSOs via GB3OA are not affected, nor The Stream to shoutcast.com - [IRLP and Echolink nodes will be down for a short time](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/08/26/irlp-and-echolink-nodes-will-be-down-for-a-short-time/): The IRLP and Echolink nodes 5302 will be down for a short time either this afternoon (Saturday) or tomorrow afternoon. This is to add a fan to a PSU that is warming up on longer node connections, and to also make a slight modification to monitoring equipment. It’s expected that the nodes will be down for about an hour, although Murphy’s Law may rear its head of course 🙂 The node equipment itself will not be touched so no change will be noticed when using them after the downtime. RF to RF contacts will not be affected during the downtime […] - [Echolink outgoing now back on track](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/08/15/echolink-outgoing-now-back-on-track/): The problem has now been solved. Please prefix an Echolink number with a * instead of a # in future. - [Echolink outgoing down for present](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/08/15/echolink-outgoing-down-for-present/): Owing to a software problem Echolink outgoing is down for the time being. Echolink incoming, IRLP incoming and outgoing, and RF-RF QSOs are unaffected. - [IRLP and Echolink now running like clockwork](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/07/29/irlp-and-echolink-now-running-like-clockwork/): The IRLP and Echolink nodes have now been adjusted and can be confirmed to be spot-on. To find a list of IRLP nodes that are either Active, Idle or Down, go to: http://irlp.g4eid.co.uk/status/statusnode_page.html At this website there are also details of IRLP Reflector connections and Echolink Conferences. And looking at the Reflectors it’s noticeable that there isn’t one for the UK. There used to be one in Lancaster, run by Mike Dent G6PHF. If anyone has the technical nouse then I’m sure one would be welcomed and increase activity. Finally, remember to put a # before an Echolink number and […] - [Let's Get it Right. IRLP and Echolink.](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/07/27/lets-get-it-right-irlp-and-echolink/): I’m sure we all want GB3OA’s transmission quality and abilities to be top-notch. With this in mind we’ve decided to keep the IRLP and Echolink nodes off the air until later tomorrow. This has the advantage that all changes are instigated in one testing block, rather than disrupting the nodes several times over a period. At certain points you may hear David Cameron (yes, really!) VE7LTD transmitting audio tests. Thanks, but there is no need to respond with a report as he is being monitored by us (but those who do we understand it’s only natural to come back with […] - [IRLP and Echolink down this afternoon](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/07/27/irlp-and-echolink-down-this-afternoon/): For some recabling work the IRLP and Echolink nodes will be off for a time this afternoon. If you hear nothing more of this, they will have been brought back up by 5pm. The Shoutcast stream or RF-RF comms through the repeater are unaffected. - [IRLP and Echolink nodes now back on air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/07/19/irlp-and-echolink-nodes-now-back-on-air/): The IRLP and Echolink nodes are now testing and in beta form on-air through GB3OA. The repeater keepers apologise for the time it has taken to re-instate them but, as regular readers know, a new server had to be purchased. It is unlikely that they will be off-air while the testing phase is advanced as this can be done live on-air. We now ask all past users to try both the Echolink, and especially the IRLP node, so we can tweak the nodes with precision. As mentioned, this can be done while you’re having a QSO. Please give your callsign […] - [News on the IRLP and Echolink nodes](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/07/06/news-on-the-irlp-and-echolink-nodes/): Hi guys. We’ve had a couple of emails from regular users of GB3OA’s IRLP facility requesting the latest news on returning IRLP and Echolink onto the air. Unfortunately, when the original server that ran IRLP and Echolink became faulty and was investigated, after solving faults it was found that others had appeared and now it has been decided to lay that particular server to rest. For those that don’t know the technical part of IRLP in detail, if you’ve been running an IRLP node in the past it’s not a matter of just replacing one PC for another. The technical […] - [Update on IRLP/Echolink linking](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/06/17/update-on-irlpecholink-linking/): Hi guys. Although there’s not much to report, the IRLP/Echolink server is being upgraded and fully tested before coming on-air. There’s no way that a time frame can be stated for this, but very hopefully sooner than later. Apologies to all, and there’s a number, who do use this feature of GB3OA Southport. When it does re-appear there’s a matter of using it. As normal with your licence, give your callsign (slowly) once connected to another node or a reflector. And remember that we have a tie with the Kathmandu repeater and node, 9N1SP (5511), in Nepal near Mt.Everest. Operators […] - [The Stream now back up and running](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/06/07/the-stream-now-back-up-and-running/): After some time The Stream is now available throughout the World again. The Stream’s web page is unchanged at: https://gb3oa.org.uk/the-stream/ If you have VLC MEDIA PLAYER (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.en-GB.html)  just go to menu item Open Network Stream and add: http://184.154.90.186:8350 Alternatively, you can use Shoutcast.com in your web browser. Owing to the close proximity of trees between The Stream’s receiver and GB3OA Southport repeater,  the received signal strength is about 5.7. Again, apologies to all listeners for the downtime. - [Problems with The Stream at GB3OA Southport](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/05/27/problems-with-the-stream-at-gb3oa-southport/): Those that use the GB3OA repeater’s stream will have noticed today that it has been unavailable (if you’re not sure what this is go to https://gb3oa.org.uk and go to The Stream page). It’s a long story but two software patches didn’t go well. In the end it was decided that as The Stream was running on a version 1 Raspberry Pi, and there was a version 2 unused, to go ahead and upgrade by using the v.2 and the new Linux Debian Jessie kernel. This has now been installed and it’s now a matter of configuring Alsa, Darkice, Lame and […] - [IRLP and Echolink nodes down on GB3OA Southport](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2017/05/18/irlp-and-echolink-nodes-down-on-gb3oa-southport/): Owing to a fault with the IRLP and Echolink nodes server these are not available at present. The fault is being investigated subject to work commitments. Apologies to those who use these portals – obviously the technical team wish to bring them back on-line a.s.a.p. The fault does not affect the RF capabilities of GB3OA, so RF communication through the repeater is unchanged.   - [IRLP and Echolink 5302 nodes back in operation](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2016/09/09/irlp-and-echolink-5302-nodes-back-in-operation/): Both the IRLP and Echolink nodes have now returned to service after the fault on the hard drive of the server was rectified. Again apologies to all those who use the nodes for the downtime of them. - [ GB3OA IRLP and Echolink 5302 nodes unavailable](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2016/09/05/gb3oa-irlp-and-echolink-5302-nodes-unavailable/): The dedicated server for these two nodes now has an unrecoverable fault. It may be some time before the fault is cleared. Some users of Echolink may not realise there is a Catch-22 situation when using Echolink on both this node and all other nodes. If you try to connect and cannot it’s because there is a QSO already going on. If you can connect OK then there is no QSO on the repeater and you should call CQ with your callsign, as normal. Otherwise there is no point in connecting….. Apologies to all of the users that use IRLP […] - [The Simple Way to have good comms with GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2016/04/01/the-simple-way-to-have-good-comms-with-gb3oa/): It’s been noticed in the logs and heard on air that users have been having problems with DTMF tones and OA recognising them. Most repeaters in the UK are now narrow FM using 12.5kHz filters in the receiver and OA is no exception. So, if your rig is set to wide FM your DTMF tones will be clipped and distorted by the OA receiver. Some may get through and be recognised but others won’t, and you’ll be left wondering why OA is not responding. All recent rigs have a menu option for wide or narrow FM and obviously for good […] - [Spectacular IRLP QSO!](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2016/03/23/spectacular-irlp-qso/): As you know, GB3OA through IRLP and Echolink and DTMF tones can communicate with other repeaters throughout the world. There are some truly interesting locales, like Wagga Wagga (6260) in Australia, or Palmer Station (8838) in the Antarctic, but it seems that Steve M0SPI (Mawdesley) has at least equalled this by contacting new repeater 9N1SP (5511) in Kathmandu, Nepal at the foot of Everest! The repeater is on 2m and only a month old, mounted on a building of the Pulchowk Engineering Campus at Tribhuvan University. It’s been set up in answer to the recent earthquake disaster there to help […] - [The Stream problems](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2016/03/12/the-stream-problems/): Apologies to the users of The Stream today. You will have noticed it down and up several times over the course of 12.30 til 13.30hrs. There is a slight problem with the MP3 opening announcement file and a file called the fallback file. This is an MP3 file that gets played when the server loses the stream. It’s 12 minutes long before it repeats and basically has announcements saying The Stream is down, and includes background music. A ticket has been lodged with the server company and the problems should be rectified shortly. However, there will be a further period […] - [Incoming Echolink now available again](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/12/31/incoming-echolink-now-available-again/): Apologies to those trying to connect to GB3OA using Echolink. The router updated itself automatically but changed a couple of the settings, allowing Echolink contacts to go out from GB3OA but not come in. This has now been corrected and all is well. IRLP contacts were not affected. - [GB3OA web site Users - 2015 in review](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/12/30/2015-in-review/): 2015 – just about fully over…. Click the link below for the GB3OA web site 2015 annual report The GB3OA 2015 Annual report. - [GB3OA New Year on-air Party](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/12/29/gb3oa-new-year-on-air-party/): Hi Guys. Throughout New Years Eve / New Years Day, please be aware that GB3OA may get connected to various conferences / reflectors as the New Year is seen in across the globe. Feel free to join in the conversations, but it’s essential you keep your overs short since many hundreds of nodes could possibly be connected simultaneously.  Short overs means less than 60 seconds, Remember, be brief! If you wish to have a local QSO then GB3OA must be disconnected from the reflector using DTMF 73 no matter how short the local QSO is.  The first place that has […] - [Lonely Planet? The Stream helps to decide](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/12/09/lonely-planet-the-stream-helps-to-decide/): ‘As many intelligent people know, aliens are all around us‘ – from the opening titles of NBC’s Third Rock from the Sun. The Stream’s Raspberry Pi was only using 16% CPU and it seemed a waste to not use the rest. So running BOINC’s SETI@home to use the rest of the CPU has become the ideal answer. SETI is an acronym for the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence and its purpose is to analyse radio signals, searching for signs of extra terrestrial intelligence. You run a program on your PC, laptop, tablet, phone or Pi which takes data from the University […] - [Confirmation of various timeouts on GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/10/17/confirmation-of-various-timeouts-on-gb3oa/): To avoid confusion, the relevant web pages (Repeater Details and Internet Linking) have been changed to specify the various timeouts on OA. They are: RF to RF – five minutes (the errant PTT has to be opened to reset the timer) IRLP and Echolink – four minutes, and disconnection of the distant end Echolink will also specify an error code if the txm is more than four minutes – a link to all OA error codes can be found on the Internet Linking page. THE STREAM: this is now fully up to spec again and running normally. It can easily […] - [Node 5302 short outage](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/10/08/node-5302-short-outage/): The repeater’s internet linking Node (5302) went offline last night (7th October) due to a failed Operating System upgrade. We’re pleased to report the fault has been fixed and everything is now running normally. In addition, it was noticed that the Node’s timeout had been accidentally set too short. This has also been corrected. The timeout is now back to the default setting of four minutes. - [The Stream returns on-line](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/09/20/the-stream-returns-on-line/): Apologies to all world-wide Stream and Shoutcast.com listeners for the lengthy delay in resolving what turned out to be several complicated problems. Daily these were worked on with seemingly more confusing and complicated answers. Now, a brand new hi-spec server is being used and the faults reduced to an acceptable level for the moment. There will be tweaking going on over the immediate  future and so there will be short periods of downtime. Please read the The Stream page for the new ip address and also new links for using your Winamp, Media Player, Real Player and QuickTime Players. - [The Stream down at present](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/09/07/the-stream-down-at-present/): Owing to a technical problem The Stream will be down for a couple of days. We apologise to our world-wide listeners of The Stream who listen via Shoutcast or direct via the IP address. - [GB3OA Southport fully operational again](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/05/05/gb3oa-southport-fully-operational-again/): IRLP and Echolink interlinking are now running at 100% again after a failed PSU was swapped out. Again, apologies from the GB3OA team for the disruption and any cancelled QSOs. - [IRLP and Echolink Interlinking down](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/05/04/irlp-and-echolink-interlinking-down/): Failure of a vital item of equipment in the Interlinking section means that both IRLP and Echolink Interlinking is not available at present. Unfortunately this will continue for the next couple of days until the equipment can either be serviced or swapped out. Apologies to both locals and distant users who have regular QSOs using IRLP or Echolink through GB3OA. The Shoutcast Stream is unaffected. - [Temporary interlinking problem](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/04/10/temporary-interlinking-problem/): The IRLP and Echolink interlinking was down for two days from 7th til the 9th April owing to the interlinking hard drive giving up the ghost. A new drive was quickly purchased, a backup restored onto it and interlinking succesfully enabled. Apologies from the team if this marred any arranged QSOs. - [GB3OA website changes](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/01/05/gb3oa-website-changes/): This website has been given a general tidy up, and some confusing text rewritten. Also there are a number of additions. This includes, on the Internet Linking page, the important fact that although the timeout of the repeater in RF-RF mode is five minutes, the timeout in RF-Echolink mode is four minutes. If an over extends beyond four minutes the link with the Echolink station is automatically disconnected and OA announces a COSLOCK error. If a user receives this error they should consider reducing the length of their overs whilst on the repeater – usually three minutes is plenty for […] - [GB3OA interlinking now 24/7](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2015/01/02/gb3oa-interlinking-now-247/): The repeater keepers are pleased to announce that IRLP and Echolink interlinking has now been made available 24/7. A watch will be kept on the interlinking but there is confidence that it will now operate 100%. Please remember to use interlinking according to licence conditions – give your callsign before sending DTMF tones, and give a firm CQ when connected. Thanks. - [Streaming of GB3OA audio continues worldwide](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/12/30/streaming-of-gb3oa-audio-continues-worldwide/): Just a reminder that The Stream, which is routed to shoutcast.com, continues to run without problem. There are two ways to access it worldwide – by going to http://shoutcast.com and searching for GB3OA or by opening VLC media player, then OPEN NETWORK STREAM in the menu of the player and enter: http://184.154.43.106:8080 A timely Festive Season greeting starts the stream at present. We wish all a prosperous and healthy 2015. - [Interlinking latest](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/12/29/interlinking-latest/): At present interlinking on both IRLP and Echolink is available between the hours of 0900 and 2359UTC. - [GB3OA update - interlinking](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/12/22/gb3oa-update-interlinking/): IRLP and Echolink interlinking will be switched on on Christmas Day and New Years Eve. The repeater will be closely monitored for any faults occuring. Should this happen users must be prepared for OA to be then turned off pretty swiftly. However, should things progress well interlinking may be switched on as decided on the fly. The repeater keepers respectfully request that if OA is linked to a reflector that the traffic be worldwide and not local QSOs. US hams especially get irritated by this, and as the Head of IRLP is usually listening in on New Years Eve he […] - [GB3OA back on air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/12/20/gb3oa-back-on-air/): Although nothing was actually found that could explain the problems that took ‘OA off air, a re-aligmment of some elements on the repeater has been undertaken. As promised, the repeater was back “on air” yesterday (19th December), but in the event, only into a dummy load. The decision to do this was based on the fact, that we eventually decided to replace the PA unit regardless, and it was thought appropriate that a period of monitoring *very* locally was the best approach for a few hours. All appears to be ok, so as of 17:30 today (20th December 2014), the […] - [Date for repeater back on-air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/12/05/date-for-repeater-back-on-air/): Investigations have been made with the repeater and it is now due to return to service on Friday 19th December, as from that date it can be monitored closely. Although the repeater has been re-aligned nothing was forthcoming as to the initial problem. It may be that the problem was local QRN unintentionally made – let’s hope this was a one-off. The repeater keepers thoroughly apologise for the extended time that the repeater has been off air and thank all its users that have contacted them with their continuing support. - [GB3OA Off-Air](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/10/14/gb3oa-off-air/): Owing to problems on the receive side OA has had to be taken off-air for the present. The Stream will continue to run. Watch here or listen on The Stream for when OA returns. - [Latest details on RAYNET use of GB3OA on 31st August](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/08/29/latest-details-on-raynet-use-of-gb3oa-on-31st-august/): Specifics have now been finalised for the Rotary Walk between North Liverpool and Southport on 31st August 2014 when RAYNET will have exclusive use of GB3OA. The times of RAYNET’s use will now be 08.30 BST until at least 16.00 BST (07.30 UTC till 15.00 UTC). As before, IRLP and Echolink interlinking will not be available between these times, but the Shoutcast stream will not be affected. - [RAYNET use of GB3OA during August 2014](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/08/12/raynet-use-of-gb3oa-during-august-2014/): There will be a Southport RAYNET Emergency Service practice session on the repeater from approx. 18.45 til 20.15 BST on Wednesday August 20th. And on Sunday 31st August RAYNET will be engaged on a local Rotary walk from approx. 08.00 till 14.00 BST. During both these events the repeater will be handed over completely to RAYNET, interlinking will be cut, and it will be appreciated if non-RAYNET operators forgo using GB3OA. The Shoutcast stream will not be affected and continue as normal. - [Decision - no ads to be on our Shoutcast stream](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/08/03/decision-no-ads-to-be-on-our-shoutcast-stream/): We send the Stream data signal to Shoutcast via an intermediary which we pay for. However, Shoutcast have now informed us that we can send our stream direct to them for free – but they would put adverts on our stream every hour. We’ve discussed this and made the decision not to use the free service, as we feel that our regular listeners who leave the stream running most of the day would not appreciate adverts every hour. - [Stream Hardware Now Moved](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/08/03/stream-hardware-now-moved/): The Stream hardware has now been moved to its new location. It communicates into the Internet via wifi which works well. However, the RF received signal strength is not as good as expected and there is little room to move the aerial, so for now there will be a small amount of noise on the received signal. Please feel free to comment on your thoughts on this. - [Stream down music..... updated!](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/06/17/stream-down-music-updated/): When the stream hardware at this end is taken down for maintenance, the server that is in some far off distant land, heck knows where, that’s between here and the Shoutcast server detects the loss of stream and automatically fills in with an mp3 file that the GB3OA team have uploaded. This used to contain one piece of music and an announcement, which kept going around in a loop of a few minutes until the stream became active again. Now this has been lengthened with more ‘interval’ music and announcements to make it more entertaining. Although it’s unlikely you’ll catch […] - [Blackpool..... covered!](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/06/11/blackpool-covered/): Those amateurs visiting or living in Blackpool will be interested to know that we’ve now heard that Blackpool is just about fully covered by OA. This is after receiving useful information on signal levels from OA around and about the town…. Ian 2E0EDX emailed to say: I have been accessing the Southport repeater for a few days now with the intention of trying out IRLP in the coming weeks ahead. I have also worked Ronnie M3KDO on a couple of occasions. On looking at the repeater website it makes mention to contacting you with regards to the repeater coverage. I […] - [Update on future Shoutcast downtime](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/06/08/update-on-future-shoutcast-downtime/): There will be short periods of downtime on the Shoutcast stream as the hardware is reconfigured and rebooted. Also, relocation of the hardware is approaching. Before this takes place a news item will be posted here. The GB3OA team hope these necessary downtime intervals don’t spoil your enjoyment of listening to GB3OA worldwide. - [Shoutcast problems](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/06/07/shoutcast-problems/): Apologies to those who regularly listen to the GB3OA Shoutcast stream – those in Canada, the US, Norway and Brazil as well as other far off exotic territories. Our Shoutcast server has had an extended problem which was only finally resolved yesterday. We can confirm now that the server is now fully up to spec and can only apologise for the protracted delay in resolving the issue. As always the GB3OA stream can be listened to by pointing your VLC player to: http://184.154.43.106:8080 - [Shoutcast stream now back online](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/25/shoutcast-stream-now-back-online/): We’re pleased to inform that our remote server is now online again and functioning normally supplying our Shoutcast stream. Apologies to all who do use this stream for the amount of time it has taken to co-ordinate the return of the server. - [Shoutcast stream down at present](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/24/shoutcast-stream-down-at-present/): It seems that the Shoutcast link is broken at present and apologies to those who like to listen to OA that way. We’re obviously looking into the cause. - [Interlinking now back online](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/19/interlinking-now-back-online/): The essential maintenance on the nodes, expected to last the entire day, was completed a lot swifter than expected and they’re now fully available again. - [Shoutcast stream returns](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/18/shoutcast-stream-returns/): The Shoutcast stream is now UP! and working as normal. - [Shoutcast stream fault](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/18/shoutcast-stream-fault/): The on-line server that supplies the data to the Shoutcast.com server is malfunctioning at present and log-in is not available to reboot it at present. No doubt the engineers are performing some maintenance. If you listen to the stream at the moment you’ll hear the start stream message every minute or so. A further notice will be issued when the stream returns to normal. - [Interlinking unavailability date](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/17/interlinking-unavailability-date/): Interlinking of GB3OA using IRLP and Echolink will be down for essential maintenance on Wednesday 19th February 2014. It’s expected to be down for the full day, although it may become available later in the day…. The Shoutcast stream feed will not be affected as that uses a different server. - [IRLP outtage now back](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/15/291/): Apologies to those ops who were trying to connect to an IRLP node or reflector on 14th Febrauary 2014. The OA node hard drive had become full with other data that shares the drive, preventing node connections and the self cleansing script had failed. The unnecessary data has now been deleted and now all is well. - [Storm of the Century?](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/13/storm-of-the-century/): After very strong winds, rain and 100mph gusts battered Southport last night, 12th Feb14, surprisingly this morning GB3OA’s mast and antenna were still stood up strong. Phil G8XVV and David G4TUP had a QSO via OA at the height of the storm, and although lights were dipping OA continued at full strength. However, son Michael of Repeater Keeper Mark G4EID was one to get caught in the storm when he and other personnel and customers were evacuated from a leisure centre that stands right by the coastline after part of the roof became damaged. The immense storm last night certainly […] - [Safety and Emergency use of GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/11/safety-and-emergency-use-of-gb3oa/): Sunday February 9th 2014 saw the first occasion when the Southport RAYNET Emergency Service used GB3OA exclusively. This was for an important safety and emergency exercise during the Mad Dog 10km run to test the use of the repeater when used in a real emergency when operators would be  stationed in various areas of Southport. The trial worked 100% and Southport RAYNET Group Controller Stuart G3OCR, at the end of the exercise commented over OA how well the repeater had handled the traffic and thanked normal users from refraining to use the repeater during the exercise. According to the Shoutcast […] - [Update for recommended player for Shoutcast stream](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/11/update-for-recommended-player-for-shoutcast-stream/): The Stream page has been pretty much rewritten now. This is after extensive testing to find a stream player that can handle flaky wifi, 3G or internet feeds. To find out which player it is and how to connect it The Stream page tells all. - [Putting multi-tone CTCSS on older rigs](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/06/putting-multi-tone-ctcss-on-older-rigs/): It’s now quite easy to have CTCSS on older rigs with the introduction of the PBCT1LP board, the size of a postage stamp. For full details and a demo of its use on an FT290 see the Operating ‘OA page. - [YouTube video](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/02/03/youtube-video/): Yesterday Dutch station Paul PE7B/P connected to Belgium repeater ON0LN on 70cms to gain access  to GB3OA and call CQ in Southport.  David G4TUP replied and they had a QSO. What David didn’t know was that Paul was filming the contact and has now put it on YouTube for all to enjoy (?) - [The Stream now out of Beta](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/01/30/the-stream-now-out-of-beta/): The GB3OA stream feed is now fully functioning and so now out of  beta phase. See The Stream page on this web site for details, and how to listen to it anywhere in the world. David G4TUP. - [Latest on the Shoutcast audio stream feed of GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/01/20/latest-on-the-shoutcast-audio-stream-feed-of-gb3oa/): The GB3OA repeater Shoutcast stream feeder equipment was moved from its temporary beta-testing home at the QTH of David G4TUP to its location by the GB3OA repeater last Saturday 18th January. If you’d been listening to GB3OA on-air and on the feed you would have noticed quite a bit of testing going on in the early afternoon. Unfortunately, the envisaged position of the feed equipment was located next to trunking that held many cables with different types of data and voltages. When powered up it was found that the feed had a large amount of mains hum and data noise […] - [GB3OA available via Internet streaming.](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/01/10/gb3oa-available-via-internet-streaming/): On test now is a stream feeder of the output of GB3OA to Shoutcast, which means that GB3OA can now be listened to worldwide by anyone! On your smartphone browser, tablet or PC go to www.shoutcast.com and type GB3OA into the search bar. Then click the play icon at the bottom of the page and advance the volume control. If no QSO is in progress you’ll hear a chuffing sound, set the volume so that it can just be heard (note that iPads and iPhones need to use the TuneIn app as the Safari browser cannot play Shoutcast streams). Listening to this […] - [Internet linking temporarily unavailable.](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2014/01/01/internet-linking-temporarily-unavailable/): I hope everyone who used the internet linking facility on the repeater managed some good contacts yesterday! Unfortunatley, due to some inappropriate operating practice this morning (Wednesday 1st January), the internet linking has temporarily been turned off. The reason for this is that we can (and have) been been blocked from many remote nodes when this poor practice occurs. Often these blocks remain permanent, preventing users who use the facility correctly from being able to enjoy the linking to its fullest extent. The linking will be turned back on in due course, but not until some security measures have been […] - [Operating considerations when connected to New Year's Eve reflector 9200](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2013/12/31/operating-considerations-when-connected-to-new-years-eve-reflector-9200/): As the NYE 9200 reflector is connected to many nodes throughout the world it is imperative that strict operating is followed: 1. When in QSO with both a foreign or local station you must leave several seconds after the K before keying up. This allows other stations to break in. 2. When keying up leave one second before speaking. 3. Long overs are not allowed. 4. If in QSO with a local station and no foreign ones GB3OA must be disconnected from the reflector by sending 73 using DTMF tones. - [GB3OA world wide New Year's Eve party!](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2013/12/30/gb3oa-world-wide-new-years-eve-party/): New Year’s Eve party reflector 9200 Just a reminder that all amateurs within range of GB3OA are welcome throughout the day and night of tomorrow, New Year’s Eve, to connect to GB3OA and enjoy the world wide celebration of the New Year as it passes each country. Those amateurs on their own are especially welcome. Have fun! From Philip G8XVV, David G4TUP and Mark G4EID. - [Season's Greetings](https://gb3oa.org.uk/2013/12/24/seasons-greetings/): Wishing all users and listeners of GB3OA a very merry Christmas!  Why not pop on or listen out for activity over the forthcoming days! It’s likely GB3OA will connect up to the New Year’s Eve party on Reflector 9200. An announcement has recently been published on the IRLP users group. See below. For those that want to join in, please remember you’ll have a world wide audience! Have fun! From Philip G8XVV, David G4TUP and Mark G4EID. Continuing the annual tradition, all IRLPdom is invited to the annual New Year’s eve QSO party on Reflector 9200.  This event gets started at 1030 […] ## Pages - [Linking](https://gb3oa.org.uk/linking/): Linking Options at GB3OA Basic Repeater GB3OA runs on a Yaesu DR-2XE. If you’re within range of the repeater, you can use basic analogue or C4FM and hold QSO’s with other amateurs who are also within the coverage area of the repeater. Things don’t get simpler than this. Arguably this is not real linking, other than providing the ability for two stations who cannot hear each other directly to communicate! Wires-X (within GB3OA’s coverage area) In addition to the above, GB3OA is also connected (on site) to a Yaesu HRI-200 with a PC and an internet connection. This enables the […] - [Privacy Policy](https://gb3oa.org.uk/privacy-policy/): Who we are Our website address is: https://gb3oa.org.uk Comments When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. And those from the initial installation all those years ago. The GB3OA cabinet incorporates a Tait T375 transmitter and T377 receiver at the top, an ICS Linker II logic board is located at the rear of one of the facia plates, and clearly seen at the bottom the Sinclair Q2330E diplexer six-filter set. Diamond X50 aerial is mounted clear of all surrounding buildings, although there is still a slight amount of shadow in some areas of Southport. Philip G8XVV giving […] - [Operating GB3OA](https://gb3oa.org.uk/operating-oa/): Operating Guidelines   - [Latest News](https://gb3oa.org.uk/news/) - [Welcome](https://gb3oa.org.uk/): This web site contains the operational and technical details of Amateur Radio Repeater GB3OA located in Southport Town Centre. GB3OA came on-air in March 2006. In October 2013 it was moved a short distance from its original location to a new home. Tests show that the coverage is broadly in line with the NOV. In July 2023, the repeater hardware was swapped out, the ageing Tait set-up was replaced by a Yaesu DR-2XE offering both analogue and C4FM. Please follow the links above for the latest news on the repeater and for any other associated details. For those who work out from the photos exactly where […] - [Coverage](https://gb3oa.org.uk/coverage/): Coverage This is the latest ETCC plot of coverage: The plot is a straight lift of what is published officially on the ETCC web site. You can see it with more detail here.  The blue area represents a 90% likelihood of outdoor HT coverage.  After tests, though, we feel this is somewhat over optimistic, especially if the rig has a rubber duck aerial instead of a normal whip. However, coverage in and around Southport Town Centre is 99%. The magenta area represents a 90% likelihood of mobile communication. From the outset, GB3OA was designed to provide only local coverage for coastal south […] - [Repeater Details](https://gb3oa.org.uk/repeater-details/): Repeater Details Details of GB3OA can also be found on the ETCC website.
